Pond Project

The Pond Project that never ends

Aug 2007

The Pond has an upper and lower pool with a ~4 feet drop between them.  There is approximately 60,000 gals in the two pools.  The pump house is about 90 feet from the lower pond and about 40 feet from the upper pond.  The pond is constructed of gunnite.  The water is pumped from the lower pond to the upper pond where it is filtered.  The water flows from the upper pond down a series of waterfalls to the lower pond.  The system is set up to return about 80% of the water flow to the upper pond and 20% to the lower pond to maximize circulation in both pools.  There are 2 3HP pumps.  They each move about 150 GPM.    Typically only 1 is running 24 x7.  That will result in moving ~200,000 gals daily or the water in the pond is circulated more than 3 times a day.  I put in some fresh water daily.

The upper pond is roughly an oval (39 X 50) with bowl like shape with the max depth around 4.5 feet.  My guess is the average depth is 3.3 feet.  There are 2 fountains for additional aeration.  A 6” pipe feeds the upper pond.  From the 6” pipe, six 2” pipes spread around the pond distributing the water in the upper pond.  There is a 6” drain pipe that is used only for draining the upper pond.

The lower pond is roughly an oval (40 X 35) with a bowl like shape with the max depth around 4.5 feet.  Average depth is 3.0 feet.  There are also 2 fountains for additional aeration.  In addition to the water flowing from the upper pond, there is a 4” pipe that feeds the lower pond.  From the 4” pipe, six 2” pipes spread around the pond distributing the water in the upper pond.  There is a 90/10 split of the return water with 10% going back into the lower pond for improved circulation.  There is a 6” return pipe from the lower pond to the pump house.

The irrigation pump is 10 hp 230V 3 phase motor.  The well is 425 feet deep with the static water level at 275 ft.  The steel casing is 8".  The flow rate is ~50 gals/min

6” drain lines piping from the upper and lower ponds.  Piping to pumps is 2”.  The upper 2 valves are the upper pond.  Photo was before the filtering system and skimmer were installed.

The water filter is an Aqua Ultima II 60,000 Pro Series. (See www.Aquaultraviolet.com)  Need to backwash 3 complete cycles; 90 sec of backwash, 30 sec of rinse.  Once a season, you need to put 1 gal of chorine into the filter, stir, let sit for 1 hour, do 3 cycles of backwash/rinse.

      The original Ozone Equipment.

New UV Light is an Aqua Viper SL Series 800 Watt 2" PVC Plastic Sterilizer.  Does a great job.  (See www.Aquaultraviolet.com)    The serial number of the Viper is 097035.  Hot line is 800 454 2725 (X112 Jamie).   UV bulbs must be replace annually.  Local Oregon Aqua ultraviolet distributor is Oregon Aquatic 541.461.5537

We installed a Savio Skimmer/Filter.  Love the large capacity.  Only requires weekly cleaning.
