James B. Johnson,
Business & Civic Entrepreneur
In May 2005 after 3 years of retirement, the
prefect opportunity emerged and James B Johnson became the President
and CEO of Tripwire. Tripwire
is the leader in Configuration Auditing and Control software that reduces operational risk
and ensures the security and availability of your IT applications which increase
uptime, reduce firefighting, enforces compliance, and improves your bottom
line.
In his free time, Jim is a business and civic entrepreneur and an angel
investor. He works closely with other High Tech and Business leaders,
Legislative leaders and the Oregon University System to educate Oregonians on
the long term economic benefits of investing in Oregon's universities.
One of his top priorities is to make Oregon's first Signature Research Center, Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnology
Institute (ONAMI) a success. The
ONAMI Research Center is a joint collaboration between several Oregon University
System campuses – led by Oregon State
University (OSU) and University of Oregon (UO) – the private
sector, including Hewlett Packard, and the Pacific Northwest National Labs (PNNL).
The
ONAMI Center
will put nanotechnology to work in real microscale devices. This new
technology will revolutionize energy, medical and chemical devices by
miniaturizing the size of everything from medical pumps in the human body to
heat pumps in homes, bringing unprecedented levels of performance to such
things HVAC systems and semiconductor interfaces. For example, matchbook-size
microreactors might operate a laptop computer for weeks rather than using
short-lived batteries; and micro medical devices would manufacture chemicals
such as insulin right inside the human body
His civic entrepreneurial interest is involves
Social
Venture Partners Portland (SVPP) a new non-profit organization where he's
a founding partner and board member. Its goal
is to develop philanthropy and volunteerism to achieve positive social change
in our community. Using the venture capital approach as a model, SVPP is
committed to giving time, money and expertise to create partnerships with
not-for-profit organizations. During
it's first three years of operation, SVPP has given out almost
$500,000.
Jim is an angel investor having invested in over a dozen start-ups and
currently sits on the board of EasyStreet: an online
service.
He was a member of the Oregon Growth Account (OGA)
board from 2001-2006. The Oregon Growth Account was
created, within the Education Stability Fund, during the 1995 Legislative
Session. The goal of OGA is to make investments in or providing
seed capital for emerging growth businesses in key industries in Oregon while
making a reasonable return for the State by investing in funds that focus on
Oregon opportunities. He was a member of the Oregon's Engineering and Technology Industry Council
(ETIC)
from 1996 - 2001 and was the chairman from 1998
to 2001. Under ETIC's leadership during it's first 6 years, Oregon has
increased it's investment in Engineering education from $0 to over $37M and industrial
support has increased to over $50M. Jim also was a member of the Oregon Council on Knowledge and Economic
Development (OCKED), and was chair of the technology transfer
sub-committee which drove the successful establishment of Oregon's first
signature research center which leads the country in the area of Nanoscience and Microtechnology
interactions with funding of over $21M.
Jim currently serves on the OSU
Foundation's Presidents Campaign, the OSU advisory board, and chairs the OSU
Engineer College advisory board. For
his work in the community, he received the OSU Distinguished Citizen Award
at the June 2001 Commencement. He also does

medical treatment for people who cannot afford public transportation, or who

Before retiring from Intel Corporate (INTC)
in 2001, Jim was formerly an Intel Vice President in the Technology and Manufacturing Group, and
Oregon

in his 27 year career at Intel. Jim
was the general manager of Intel's Internet Service Operation. In 1994, he became the Director of Marketing for Intel's
Internet and Communications Group in Hillsboro, Oregon. Before that, Johnson served as
general manager of Intel's PC Enhancement Division, Intel's retail
products group, he co-founded in 1983 which grew to over $500M in sales. Prior to that, he was
an engineering manager and a design engineer.

Jim earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from
the University of California at Berkeley (Go Bears!) in 1973 and a Master of Science
Degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1974. He's
married with four grown daughters (one of which graduated from
Oregon State University), 3 grandkids and lives in Portland, Oregon. He loves skiing,
